harles Lowell, Lt. (USAA1F) 2-27-22 to 4-11-44(KIA) Inducted April 22, 1942 and called to active duty September 1942. Sent first to Nashville, TN then to Maxwell Field, AL where he stayed until February 1943. Assigned to 67th Flying Training Detachment at Union City, TN then trained at Courtland, AL until May 1943.
To George Field, IL June 1943 and awarded his wings on July 28. Next sent west to Gowen Field, ID where he joined a B-24 Liberator training unit and was rated as a co-pilot. Unit here was the 43rd Bomb Squadron, 29th Bomb Group and here he also was assigned to a permanent crew. To Wendover Field, UT August 1943 where crew assigned to 606th Bomb Squadron, 399th Bomb Group, another B-24 training unit. Stayed here until November 10 when sent to Lincoln, NE. Further assigned to 790th Bomb Squadron, 467th Bomb Group at Wendover Field, a unit which was preparing to go overseas.
Finished training early February 1944 and flew to Herrington, KS then on to Morrison Field, FL on March 1, 1944. Flew southern ferry route to England--Trinidad, Brazil, Morocco, Wales, then to the 467th's base at Rackheath, Norfolk.
Flew first mission April 10 to Bourges, France. Second and last mission on April 11, 1944 to Oschersleben, Germany. Coming home and flying low over England, the B-24's control cables snapped and the bomber crashed near Stalham. Purple Heart Stuckman,
