We were briefed for a different kind of target that was a feedway bridge at Bielefeld on the 29th of November. Hitting a bridge at high altitude is a difficult feat. There was a cloud cover, as expected, at the target area, and we let down below the cloud deck to make a visual run. We dropped eight 1000 general purpose bombs and observed bursts at the end of the bridge.
This mission took six hours, and we now had completed six combat missions. Each member of our crew was recommended to receive the Air Medal.
Headquarters Second Air Division APO 558 issued General order number 336 dated 10 December 1944 as follows, for the Air Medal. For meritorious achievement in, accomplishing with distinction, several aerial operational missions over enemy occupied Continental Europe. The courage, coolness and skill displayed by each of these individuals in the face of determined opposition, materially aided in the successful completion of these missions. Their actions reflect great credit upon themselves and the Armed Forces of the United States.
