Diary Type: Combat - 29 Jun 44

Hatten, Paul Van Buren
Nine man crew with a Nose Gunner and Co Pilot from other crews and flew right waist in Mikes place. Dropped 12 - 500# GP bombs on the fuselage section of the Junkers aircraft factory at Aschersleben, Ger. We had P-51 and P-47 fighter protection and encountered no fighter opposition. Flak was very light till we reached the target then it was moderate but very accurate. We lost the ship in front of us over the target after a direct hit. It broke into pieces and we didn't see anyone get out. We had about five flak holes.
