Diary Type: Combat - 27 Apr 44

Prichard, Arthur Lyle
Our fourth mission was a short one, only five hours. It was for some reason referred to as a "no ball" target and what it really was was a rocket installation that started sending V-1 rockets over London. We encountered no fighters, but the mission was led by Lt. Colonel Herzberg and we made a three hundred sixty degree turn over the target in a heavy flack barrage. We were exceedingly lucky as an 88 millimeter shell went through the gas tank and the main spar on the left wing without exploding. When we got back to the base, I got on a step ladder and rammed my hand up into the gas tank, so thank God for self-sealing tanks! Chuck went out through the top hatch and walked along the wing to the hole, then called me up there to show me that the main spar on the wing was shot half in two. That means the Gerocko will have major surgery on that side to replace the wing.
