Diary Type: Combat - 24 May 44

Prichard, Arthur Lyle
...we flew our eigth mission. After briefing we were trucked to the hardstand of the plane we were supposed to fly and found out that a five hundred pound bomb had fallen and smashed the hydraulic lines in the bomb bay, so we were assigned "375 [ed. believe this incident happened on 25 May]. We went to Melum, France. It was an airfield. We had no flack and no fighters and dropped P.F.F. This was where we followed radar equipped ship and, when the dropped their bombs, a smoke bomb was attached that sent a trail of smoke as they left their bombbay. When we saw the smoke we salvoed the bomb load. We couldn't see the bomb strike because of clouds, so we just closed the doors and came home. This wasn't a very accurate way of bombing, but we could generally hit something as big as an airfield.
