Diary Type: Non-Combat - 20 Apr 44

Prichard, Arthur Lyle
Chuck and I were Watch Officers on the night of the 20th of April. It is a rather boring job. You are really a squadron operations baby sitter. Sign people in and out, get information for the engineering section and wait out the mission call for the next day. To keep awake and busy, we also censor mail. Each piece of mail going out is censored in case someone writes something that could be interpreted as being of a classified nature. I don’t really enjoy reading someone’s letters to family and friends but it is a job that must be done. If we find something, we take a razor blade and cut it out, and when we are done we stamp it with the word “censored” so people getting the mail will know what happened. Some privates and p.f.c’s mail I censor rather heavily and that makes their family and girl friends feel they must be pretty important to be privy to such classified information.
