We had a nine man crew without Mike and T/Sgt O'Brien in the nose and Lt Costigan flying his first mission as Navigator. We carried and dropped 4 - 1000# GP bombs and 4 - 500# incendiaries on an airfield at Vechta, Ger, 35 miles southwest of Bremen. We saw only light flak at a distance before the target. After leaving the target fighters attacked Groups all around us and we saw one 24 go down and eight chutes were seen. Some Groups were hit hard but we were never attacked directly. It was our Groups 100th mission. We had very good fighter protection by P-38's and P-51's.
