Diary Type: Combat - 13 Aug 44
Hatten, Paul Van Buren
We had a ten man crew with Lt Downing as Bombardier and Lt Trainor as our new Co Pilot. We carried 48 - 100# demolition bombs to the German lines in France. Our seven ship squadron was supposed to bomb road intersectios at Bonquestot and Berville but we ran into very accurate but moderate flak 5 minutes before the IP. LT Leyes plane just in front of us got a flak hit in the bomb bay and the plane broke in two. A piece of their plane caught the leading edge of our wing and we were forced to leave the formation dropping our bombs in the channel on our return trip home. We had a large flak hole in the left wing. I saw one chute from Lt Leyes plane and there was reports of two others. The enlisted men were in our hut and we were all good friends.
