God damn! Some joker came in at 0200 in the morning to fly a real mission! Boy, what a surprise. Our target was an Aircraft plant at Bourges, France. We took off at 0615, flew over London, near Paris and dropped our bombs (six 1,000 pounders) at 1015, four hours after take off. We didn’t encounter any fighters or flak. The target was completely destroyed.

About 200 planes took part in the raid. About the same amount of P47s for escort. We landed at 1215. Boy, it was interesting, especially watching the bombs hit! Boy, what a mess that place must have been, a mess of junk and dead people!

Two of our bombs fell late and fell in the center of town. This made me feel funny, sort of sick. The French are our allies and we’re not supposed to kill them, but two bombs in the center of the town doesn’t bring long life to anyone!

That’s no.1. 29 to go!
