Rewey, John Delbert
Good briefing to BW-1 Greenland. Take off at 1405 GMT, climbed to 5,000, flew over N. Atlantic with no definite check points till BW-3 range. Flight took 4:50. Approach Control was "Dagwood" and tower was "Blondie". Had to fly up Tuna Fjord for 50 miles from BW-3 to B-1. Runway sloped uphill from 10 ft. to 140 ft. Field was right on the edge of the fjord with mountains all around. The N. Atlantic had been filled with icebergs as was this fjord, and there was also a sunken ship and other freighters at anchor. Had trouble parking the plane as the ground man put us too close to another ship. This was the land of the midnight sun - it wasn't visible all night, but it never did get dark. There was a big glacier just northeast of the field. Several husky dogs in the camp. Nice PX for a place like this. Saw a couple of Spitfires and a Mosquito in a hangar. Went fishing and also to a movie, Jack Benny in "The Meanest Man in the World." Briefed in the evening to go to Meeks Field, Iceland to leave the next morning.
