Diary Type: Combat - 01 Sep 44

Rewey, John Delbert
Got up at 0330 for briefing at 0445. The target was an ammunition dump in a forest near Stuttgart, Ger., and we were carrying 5/1000# bombs. Assembled at 8000 over Splasher 5 and left the coast at Brighton climbing all the while. Leveled out at 22000, and when we got a little south west of Paris we ran into a front with towering cumulus to at least 30000 so the mission was abandoned. We were flying No. 2 in the low left element of Lincoln Green 3 - the No. 4 man and later the element lead aborted, so the No. 3 and ourselves wandered around the formation trying to stay out of propwash. We finally flew No. 4 in the high right element. The letdown was terrific after we passed London and we hit 220 and 230 several times. Lot of cumulus activity and the air was really rough. Les gave the boys a thrill on take off this morning by accidentally touching the brakes before the wheels left the ground. Critique at 1900, then I went right to bed.
