Mission #079 was to support the ground forces west of the village of Troarn, Fr. This was at the beginning of Operation Goodwood to secure the town of Caen which was still in German hands after D-Day.
Shown are B-24’s from the 790th BS of the 3rd (Low Left) Squadron. In the fore ground is 42-95273 (flown by J K Newhouse and crew #057-R1) in the Lead Section, 2nd (Deputy Lead) position.
The three ship element in the background are the B-24’s of the 2nd (High Right) Section. The aircraft leading this Section is 42-52571 ‘Snooper’ (flown by J E Thompson and crew #068-R0).
Just behind her is 41-29397 ‘Slugger Jr’ (flown by George W Dickinson and crew #067-R0) in the #2 position.
The aircraft furthest to the right is 42-52534 ‘Witchcraft’ (flown by Leonard Paul Vogt and crew #063-R2) in the #3 position.
The photo was taken from the Lead Ship of the 3rd Section 42-95154 ‘100 Proof (flown by Joseph Gleason Mulheran and crew #060-R0)

The next ship following is 42-50737 ‘Hot Rock’ (flown by Robert Henry Willis and crew #064-R2) in the #3 position of this Section. Interestingly, they were scheduled to fly 42-52534 ‘Witchcraft’. At the moment, I’m not sure what prevented ‘Witchcraft’ from participating.
Just above, and behind, is 42-95057 ‘Angel’ dropping her bombs (flown by Hobart Garland Ferree and crew #051-R5) in a position I’m not sure what to number yet. The formation alignment had changed at the end of the war (being a bit “wider”) and still need to determine the numbering system.

TIme for an engine change. 'Litt'l Chum' getting some engine replaced at hardstand #21. Note the aircraft in the background at hardstand #25. The 'Armory Maintenance Building' is in the background on the left. The T2 hanger for this side of the field is just out of sight to the right.
The thing to make note of is the nose art just visible, partially covered by the
Last 3' painted on the nose. This ship was ferried to the ETO by a crew that was then assigned to the 93rd BG. Presuming they named her before handing her over to the 'Mod Center' and Langford Lodge upon arrival.

B-24's taxi for takeoff. Unfortunately, the quality of the original is not good enough to identify all the aircraft. The two Olive Drab (OD) on the left in the background are able to be identified.
The one to the left is 42-52559 'Miss Fortune'. She was interned in Switzerland on 12 Jul 44. The other B-24 is 41-29397 'Slugger Jr', Both of these are identified as being assigned to the 790th BS in this photo.
'Slugger Jr' was assigned to the 790th on 12 May 44 when the original 788th BS was reassigned to the 801st BG. These two aircraft flew 5 missions together while with the 790th BS. #046 on 08 Jun 44, #055 on 18 Jun 44, 24 Jun 44, #066 on 28 Jun 44 and 'Miss Fortunes' final mission #075 on 12 Jul 44.

'Witchcrafts' ground crew working st hardstand #32. The wing of 42-52534 'Witchcraft is just visible. Photo probably taken from the waist window.
Photo is reported to have been taken on D-Day. As 'Witchcraft' flew two of the three missions that day, this photo must have been taken inbetween the 1st and 3rd mission the Group flew on D-Day.
THe faces are a bit hard to make out, however, it's believed that the men pictured are (from L-R):
